Our next stop was Taupo. Taupo is sort of the adventure capital of the North Island. You can do pretty much anything in the town from skydiving to bungee jumping. We were staying in quite a nice hostel. The others in the room were really nice except we had some concerns that one of the chaps was a bit of an alcoholic - he walked around with a can of ready mixed bourbon and coke and a bottle of beer. He was drinking both at the same time and started really early in the day. Apparently he was ripping into the English most of the time I wasn't there (he was welsh). Bit of a twat really.
The weather here was against us and a few people had their sky jumping cancelled. On route to Taupo we stopped at some waterfalls. They were called Marokopa and are said to be the third largest in New Zealand. The water was really clear and the walk had some of the best views to date....

We had a day free in Taupo and so headed for the thermal springs just outside of town. They run out from the ground and into the river. I got in for a dip and the water was as hot as a comfortable bath. It was quite cold and so I spent a fair while in the water. It did pong a bit but you put up with it for the warmth. A soon as you moved about 5 feet from where the spring entered the river, it got cold. The stop got pretty crowded as people were in there with their beers and smokes. One of the Swiss guys that came along kept on saying that he wished we had thought of bringing beer. He was really gutted. Surrounded by alcoholics much???
