Our tour guide

I book a two day strip to the great ocean road and the Grampians mountains.

I leave early morning and I'm picked up by Bill, the tour guide in a small bus. The people on the bus are nice. We head towards the great ocean road. It was built by returning soldiers from the First World War. It runs along the coast toward Adelaide. Needless to say the scenery is amazing even though it is cloudy. Our first longer stop is actually to spot Koalas. When we've spotted one from the bus we pull over and go over for a closer look. The forest is amazing and smells really Strong of the gum trees (eucalyptus) that make up the forest. We stop for lunch at a small town on the coast. Our free lunch is fish and chips. The fish was shark!!! First time eating shark and it was lovely. It had a firmer texture than cod, but not as firm as chicken. It was really good. I'll definitely have it again.

We then stopped at a number of beautiful spots to take pictures. We stopped at the twelve apostles and London bridge. The weather had cleared up by then and so the pictures came out really well. The last leg of the journey was the best though as we were driving through the a forest at night. We had to try and spot Kangaroos that would wander on the road in front of the bus. They jump out quite unaware of the Buses headlights. We are all scanning the road and bush but its difficult with only the buses headlights to illuminate the way. We spot loads of kangaroos and wallabies and everyone jumps around the bus to take pictures. We are all joking and laughing and although we are effectively just sitting on a bus, we all have a good time.

After dinner Bill takes us out to walk around the hostel grounds. We are staying in a small township at the foot of the Grampians. Bill has a torch as we all wander around the bed blocks. There are loads of kangaroos to see and they are unaffected by the torch or the noise of fourteen people walking around. We get really close . It is a really amazing experience as there are loads of stars out in the sky and the kangaroos are so cute. Poor Bill has been driving from 5 am but still stays out with us for an hour at 10pm to watch the Kangaroos!!!

After a brilliant nights sleep we jump on the bus and drive up the Grampians. We are driving through a National Park. Half of the park (nearly 500 hectares) destroyed a year ago by a massive fire. We drive for ages through blackened trees that are sprouting green leaves all the way up the trunks and burnt branches. It was an amazing sight to see the trees regenerating themselves like that. Bill was really happy that the forest was regenerating at the speed it was considering the drought the area is subject to. We stopped at some amazing lookouts and take in the scenery. After we dropped of some of the group we headed for a vineyard and to sample some wine. We also had a look around the old premises. They were made entirely from wood. It was a pretty amazing place as you could see through the floors/ceilings and make out various people making themselves busy by repairing casks or helping out with the bottling. The wine was rally good and we got to taste so much of it. I tried around 5 wines and a port. I finished early compared to the others. We soon slept it off on the bus ride back to Melbourne!!!
